WHAT IS A FISSURE SEALANT, AND IS IT HARMFUL?

Although fissure sealants are commonly associated with children, they can also be applied to adults who are more prone to tooth decay. In children, the treatment is usually performed once the permanent molars erupt, typically around the age of six. It involves sealing the deep grooves and pits (called fissures) on the chewing surfaces of the molars to protect the teeth from decay.

These grooves can easily trap food particles, bacteria, and sugary or acidic substances, creating an ideal environment for cavities to develop. A fissure sealant acts as a protective barrier, reducing the risk of tooth decay.

Fissure sealants can be applied to patients of any age who have teeth that are susceptible to cavities, even if they maintain good oral hygiene. It is one of the simplest and most effective preventive treatments available. By sealing the grooves of the teeth, it prevents food debris and bacteria from accumulating.

The procedure uses a special protective resin that differs from conventional filling materials. Since no drilling or anesthesia is required, the treatment is quick, painless, and comfortable. Fissure sealants do not damage the teeth. On the contrary, they help preserve the tooth enamel and significantly reduce the risk of cavities.

WHAT ARE THE STEPS OF THE PROCEDURE?

• The teeth are thoroughly cleaned.

• A special etching gel is applied to the tooth surface.

• The tooth is rinsed and dried.

• The fissure sealant is carefully applied.

• The material is hardened using a curing light.

• Final adjustments and checks are performed.

WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM FISSURE SEALANTS?

It is important to remember that fissure sealants alone cannot completely prevent cavities. Good oral hygiene is still essential. Teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, supported with dental floss and mouthwash. Brushing after meals or after consuming anything other than water is recommended. If brushing is not possible, rinsing the mouth with water can help remove food particles and reduce the risk of tooth decay.

With proper oral care, fissure sealants provide long-lasting protection and contribute significantly to maintaining healthy teeth.
